Shrift's first preference was always to take direct action - her sword in hand - to deal with problematic situations. Shrift tended to be aggressive and tended not to understand the wisdom of the more subtle approaches that Surly and the other renegade Napans felt obliged to take in Malaz City.

She was very superstitious and had a special amulet hung round her neck which she touched to her forehead when she felt that she needed protection against "evil and ill-luck". Shrift was a tall swordswoman who preferred to wear heavy leather armour in battle, but who wore tanned hunting leathers in more everyday situations. Shrift and the other exiles had recently been on the losing side of a civil war on the Napan Isles. Shrift was one of the Napans in exile - followers of Surly - who ended up working in a "rundown waterfront dive", " Smiley's", in Malaz City.
